Abstract

This study used classroom action Research to improve student learning activities and outcomes on buffer solutions for Grade XI 1 at SMAN 6 Pekanbaru through discovery learning. The model was applied through stages of stimulation, problem statement, data collection, data processing, verification, and generalization. CAR cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection addressed learning problems arising from the abstract and microscopic nature of buffer concepts. Participants were 36 students of class XI 1. Results show student learning activities increased from 57.61% (Cycle I, adequate) to 71.10% (Cycle II, good), meeting the success criterion. Student learning outcomes similarly improved, with classical mastery rising from 63.88% in Cycle I to 94.44% in Cycle II, and mean scores increasing accordingly. Findings indicate that systematically implemented discovery learning, supported by teacher scaffolding and iterative refinement, effectively enhances both engagement and achievement in buffer solution topics. The study recommends broader application and further Research on scaffolded discovery approaches across classes.

Syarifa Nadira, Universitas Riau

Was born in Melayu Besar on November 3, 2003, she attended SDN 001 Melayu Besar, SMPN 1, and SMAN 1 Tanah Putih Tanjung Melawan. Accepted to the Chemistry Education program at the University of Riau via SBMPTN in 2021. She participated in KUKERTA, HIMAPROSTPEK student activities, Chemistry Olympiad question teams (2023–2025), and completed PLP MBKM at MA Diniyah Putri Pekanbaru in 2024.

Maria Erna, Universitas Riau

Was born on April 24, 1972, and is a permanent lecturer in the Chemistry Education Study Program at the University of Riau. She has held the position of Professor since 2021. She earned her doctoral degree from Andalas University, with a dissertation entitled “Chitin, Chitosan, and Carboxymethyl Chitosan as Corrosion Inhibitors of Mild Steel in Peat Water Media.”

Herdini Herdini, Universitas Riau

Was born on May 27, 1962, and is a permanent lecturer in the Chemistry Education Study Program at the University of Riau. She holds a bachelor's degree in Chemistry Education and a master's degree in Organic Chemistry. Her Research interests focus on education, particularly the development and evaluation of learning media.
