Abstract

This study explores the suboptimal competence and work discipline of high school teachers. It aims to understand the meaning, perceptions, experiences, and real practices of teachers related to personality and discipline. A descriptive, qualitative approach was employed, utilizing purposive sampling, with experienced teachers from SMAN 42 East Jakarta. Data were collected through interviews and observations, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings indicate that personality competence is seen as being a role model through honesty and fairness, while discipline is reflected in a strong sense of responsibility. The primary obstacle is an administrative workload that hampers disciplinary focus, while support is provided through MGMP training and regular character-building programs. The implications underscore the importance of institutional support and policy adjustments in reducing administrative burdens, enabling teachers to focus more effectively on teaching and student character development.

Sri Maryati, Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Born in Wamena city, 16 September 2000. Student at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ). Earned bachelor’s degree in Guidance and Counseling (UHAMKA) at East Jakarta and graduated in 2022, and studying master’s degree in Educational Management (UNJ).

Heru Santosa, Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Born in Salatiga, 23 February 1963. Lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), Indonesia. He earned his undergraduate degree from IKIP Jakarta in 1988 (Adm. Pendidikan), continued with a degree in Mathematics Education in 1995 (IKIP Padang), and obtained two Master degrees in Educational Management from Universitas Negeri Jakarta in 2000 and 2016. He is actively involved in teaching courses such as Educational Statistics and Educational Planning. His research interests include Education Development, Educational Planning, and Educational Statistics.

Winda Dewi Listyasari, Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Born in Pekalongan city, 11 September 1979. Lecturer at the Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), Indonesia. She completed both her undergraduate (1998–2003) and master’s degree (2003–2006) in Educational Management at Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Her teaching focuses on Organizational Behaviour, Curriculum Management, Office Management, and Teaching and Learning Theory. Her research interests include Learning Organization, Professional Learning Community, and Leadership.
